What is Hope? Where do we look for it. Do we look to someone or something else, to fill our needs.
Are we self-sufficient and think no one else can help us, but ourselves. Do we place all our hope on ourselves, and when we fall short of our expectations, do we beat ourselves up, use and feel less than, which in turn gives us a false pride, ego, and sense of self. Are we full of despair and feel that there is no way out? Please keep coming, and if you don't get the program, the program will get you. It did me!
Trust is something we don't have a lot of and learning to put that trust in something else is a big risk in early recovery. Yet my best thoughts and actions got me here, and my first meeting gave me hope that finally I had found a way that worked. Something that would allow me to do what I had been trying to do for eight years before I got here. My first hope was that the program would work for me.

Hope is some extraordinary spiritual grace that God gives us to control our fears, not to oust them. ~Vincent McNabb
In reality, hope is the worst of all evils, because it prolongs man's torments. ~Friedrich Nietzsche, Human, All Too Human, 1878
Hope is the feeling we have that the feeling we have is not permanent. ~Mignon McLaughlin, The Neurotic's Notebook, 1960

What gave me hope were the 12 Promises of AA. I just wanted the first one. "We will know a new freedom and a new happiness." What I didn't know was that I had to get half way through Step 9 to find it and I had a long way to go.
I didn't think I was an alcoholic, I am in control you know. What I didn't know was "If you have to control it, it is already out of control.
It was the laughter that drew me in and I kept coming so I didn't have to go back out. I stayed.
