Recovery for me is freedom of choice. Not only freedom from active addiction, but freedom from negatives in our life that can bring us down, be it family or not. There were times I had to detach physically, other times just mentally and say, "That is yours, I don't have to take it on."
Thanks to this program, I am free to be me. Having said that, I want to use that freedom to be a better me, than the person that walked around in active addiction. I was in denial about being an alcoholic. My son took away the notion that I was different. He said he has never met anyone who drank like me and from what he saw, I could out drink anyone. I was the ACoA member who qualified for AA and NA.

The difference in today is that I choose to be with family at this time of year.
One of the greatest gifts of recovery. "The freedom to choose," and the ability to make healthy choices.
