Had an experience something like this when I was quite new in recovery. A friend got mean interview with a Native Elder. I was seeing her about how close I felt to Native American teachings, and a lot of people have thought I was native heritage. She said, "You look like you are Native and don't have the heritage, I don't look Native and have the heritage.
She said, "It isn't about heritage, it is about who you are in today." That was something I kept close to my heart. To top it off, she didn't know that my birthday is April 1st. I gifted her with some tobacco and she gave me a piece of what is called Fool's Gold. It is all sparkly, and represented my life. The masks I wore, and often playing the role I thought you wanted me to play.
It started by being introduced to the medicine wheel when I was in treatment and going to a Pow Wow just before my 1 year anniversary. A lot of how I look at life and my recovery is what I learned in December 1991. Just a couple of hours teachings stuck with me for 26 years.

Had a nurse in the hospital as if I was Native. The Power of healing comes from within. Breathe in, breathe out.
