Dear (((Family))) Dick's and my best friend, in and out of AA, is in urgent need of alot of prayers. Father Tom and us go back almost 23 years. Tom even married Dick and I in 1985. Last night, I got a call from Tom, which is not unusual. However, the subject of the phone call was devastating to both Dick and I. It appears that Tom has been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in both lungs. He is having the first surgery on February 12, 2004, and then coming back home, at which time, his name will be placed on a lung transplant list. Thanks ahead of time for your prayers. Love and gratitude to all of you. A day at a time,

Over the years knowing you I have heard you speak so often of Tom. I am very aware of what he means to you. I know how much this must be hurting you to know he is not well. I will add tom to my daily prayers and put his name in the special intentions prayer box in my classroom and the one inthe school basket. Lots of little ones will be praying for Tom this way.

Dear (((Family))),
Just a short update on Tom. He is back to his parish on light duty and is supposed to start chemotherapy, but is putting it off until after confirmation, first communion, some weddings, funerals and Easter.
I told him I didn't think it was too wise to do that and also that he sounded just like an "alkie"...which he agreed with.
After the chemo, he will still be placed on a lung transplant list, and Lord only knows how long that will take.
Thank you for all your prayers...I really appreciate them
love ya,

Dear (((Family))), I don't really know how to put this. I'm crying as I type. I just got off the phone with Father Tom. My hubby called him as he is hubby's sponsor , besides being our friend, and I am Father Tom's sponsor. The updated news which is a shock to hubby and I is that when I just talked to Tom , he told me they made him start the chemotherapy and the disease in both lungs is "slowly killing him". The authorities of his medical team and the Bishop have made the decision that Tom has to retire from his parish and will be moving to the priests' house here in Fall River, MA. Tom told me alot today. He didn't tell hubby on the phone because he knows I'm much stronger at handling news like this and then telling hubby. I don't know if any of you watched the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon this past September, but hubby and I were horrified when we saw him on TV. He has a blown up head, no neck , and head sits on his shoulders, 2-3 times the size it should be. Well, Tom told me today, that he has the same thing as Jerry Lewis. I said to him, "but you don't have the swelling that he has do you ?" He said, "ha ha", oh yes I do...my throat is sticking out and face and head are swollen and stomach all swollen. I'm not a freak or monster yet, I can still stand looking at myself in the mirror, but they say that they are hoping that the chemo will put this disease in remission. \ I have heard that Jerry Lewis has improved, which is what I hope will happen to Tom. He was suppose to marry my grandaughter amy, and her fiance, derrick in April of 2005. I can't predict that that will happen now as he will be retired...and hopefully still alive and not suffering. I'm asking for continued prayers that whatever happens to Tom, that God is merciful and doesn't let him suffer in anyway. Both hubby and I can't even talk right now..i had to come to the boards and talk to my family and ask for more and more prayers. To be honest, listening to him tell me the whole truth, things do not look good at all. My God, hubby and I can't even picture life without Tom being in it. He is my confessor. I only go to confession to him and receive Holy Communion from him...when hubby relapsed after 15 years in l999, every Friday night, I went to New Bedford, a couple of towns over, and Tom and I would sit at the kitchen table, and talk for hours...then he would hear my confession....then we'd walk next door and he would open the church at l0 at night and give me Holy Communion. I miss those meetings so much. He helped me so much and yet he calls me a "saint". I told him don't call me that...saints are when you become dead. He then told me, "no dorrie. God also has certain people on earth that are saints and they are ordinary people that accomplish extraordinary things. And the thousands of alcoholics and addicts that you have helped, even when you were a counselor, can't be counted, and now you still continue to do this when you are ill yourself, on the computer. Believe me, you are a saint in God's eyes." I don't mention this to brag in any way....It's just a memory of something he said to me that i can never forget and make sure i never try to hurt people and always be of help when i am called upon by God. I don't believe i'm a saint...those are Tom's words and I laugh at him when he calls me that. I appreciate the prayers and good wishes you have printed in this thread and hope you continue to pray for Tom and for God's will to be done. love you all tremendously (((family))),

Dear (((Family))), Thank you so much for all the positive response to my request for more prayers for Tom. This is a slow process that he is going thru but I have to have hope. I believe hell is having no hope and that's how I felt when drinking and living in the street. I've been to hell and back and nothing that occurs in my recovery that is difficult can come anywhere near when I was in hell. Thank you all for helping me stay out of hell, odaat. love ya and appreciate all of you,
