Today's reading in Just For Today, triggered a thought. It was so important to build a foundation to build my recovery on. It was important to have a network of recovery people, including a sponsor, a doctor who knew about addictions, and a safe place for myself. It was important to work the Steps and deal with the issues that brought me to the doors of recovery. I was told, "What brings you here will take you back out if you don't deal with it." We sometimes want to rush being the person in the community that we take the focus off of ourselves and don't give ourselves time to heal before we get ourselves into that new relationship, new job, new apartment, etc. I was told not to make any new decision in the first year. There are no shortcuts. Recovery is a journey, not a destination. Sometimes we have to make preperations before we start that journey. That means getting myself healthy. Taking the focus off what's in it for me. Putting the focus on what do I need for me and my recovery. By doing that, we can learn about ourselves, learn about the program and have something to share with our fellow addicts. You can't give away what you don't have. eor.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=spuds&thread=10075

"There are no shortcuts"
Reminds me of two things my sponsor told me...One if you're building a house you don't build it on quick sand
and
two you don't start with the roof first
There is no easier softer way....and sometimes we have to walk thru the pain in order to grow...that is called growing pains...Suffering is what is optional...
