My sponsor told me "Always examine your motive and intent and if they are coming from the right place, go for it."
I like the reading of the Just for Today book today, because it was about service. When I was 3 years sober, I put on 7 meetings in 6 days, for 7 years. At least once a year, I burnt out. I realized that it was too much for just me, and I started volunteering people and when I left to go back to school, I handed the meeting to two others, one was a woman with 6 months. She was 70 when she came into recovery, and she couldn't do enough to so her gratitude, which is a very good reason to do service.
Mine was to make indirect amends, not to myself, my amends to me was coming to recovery and choosing to STAY!
I was asked by Hamilton Housing to tell them how they could help people who have a drug and alcohol problem in their building. I said nothing, unless you made space available for a meeting. NA holds a weekly meeting in the same place I held the other meetings. They are right across the road from me.
My motive and intent was to make it to the meeting on a Friday night when I wasn't playing bridge to pick up my 20 year key tag. I picked my 19 year one there. It is now 4 months past my anniversary, I came out of Mary Ellis House on December 13th and I went to my first NA meeting on the 15th or I went to Al-Anon in the morning and NA at night on the 16th of December. I was introduced to NA in treatment. I fell in love with the literature.
When I heard you had to give it away in order to keep it, I was fearful that I wouldn't get it right. Going back was never an option, I had no choice, I had to stay clean. That got to a stage where I had to quit smoking as well, because I wanted to be a clean channel to carry the message of recovery.
When your motives come from the right place, I know I am walking with my Higher Power and He has my back at what ever I choose to do.
