Setting Goals
Hey DJ.... I'm back from the appointment so decided to
go ahead and start the discussion topic you suggested.
Having goals but keeping them realistic, for the day or the
year, is a sign of emotional health. Not dwelling on those that
can't be accomplished, at the moment, is another sign. A change
of attitude is all most of us need to move from where we are to
a better place emotionally.
There's never a better time than right now for rejoicing over
what I've done. - - From: Each Day a New Beginning

I've been coming to EOR since nearly the beginning.....
I am a grateful member of Al-anon - Naranon - ACOA
my qualifiers are all family members, a younger sis,
my younger son, my daughter & my dad etc. etc. etc.
Addiction has run in my family for years and I came
to working the 12-steps with the help of an on-line
friend almost 10 years ago. I grow and learn something
new each and every day!
I try never to give advice, but I can share what's worked
for me...... My biggest goal in recovery is to stay sane
and work the steps, one day at a time. By doing this
I've found my life to be more serene and there is peace
all around me.
In my day to day life I do strive to set goals for myself,
but I call these goals my "to do list".... I make a list
of what I want to accomplish, but I keep the list short.
I can always add to it later.... If I fail to reach my goal,
I never beat myself up over it, but I keep trying.
One things for sure, I don't set the bar to high.... when
I was younger, I wanted to be a brain surgeon but that
didn't work out. I then decided to get married and have
kids and that I did. I worked as a hostess for several
years and my Honey and I ended up opening our own
supper club. We worked at that for over 10 years but
having a bar and slot machines I ended up turning in my
notice to the hubby. Drunks and gambling addicts were
wearing my patience thin.....
If my goal was looking for work, I'd seek help with writing
my résumé and set out to pound the streets, filling out
applications until I found something. With the economy
the way it is, I'd have to be willing to work hard at finding
a job. I'd also look into some of the training programs
they have if my experience was limited.
For me today, my job is that of a caretaker for Honey.
I'm his homemaker, chauffeur, secretary, nurse, dietitian
& Dr. Mom. If he needs brain surgery, I'm not qualified!
Have a great day, SG
