We needed to ask ourselves but one short question. "Do I now believe, or am I even willing to believe, that there is a Power greater than myself?" As soon as a man can say that he does believe, or is willing to believe, we emphatically assure him that he is on his way. It has been repeatedly proven among us that upon this simple cornerstone a wonderfully effective spiritual structure can be built.

It was only a matter of being willing to believe in a Power greater than myself. Nothing more was required of me to make my beginning. I saw that growth could start from that point. Upon a foundation of complete willingness I might build what I saw in my friend. Would I have it? Of course I would!
Thus was I convinced that God is concerned with us humans when we want Him enough. At long last I saw, I felt, I believed. Scales of pride and prejudice fell from my eyes. A new world came into view. pg 12
It is only a matter of being willing to believe in a Power greater than myself. Nothing more is required of me to make my beginning. I see that growth could start from this point. Upon a foundation of complete willingness I can build what I see in my sponsor. Will I have it? Of course I will!
Thus I am convinced that God is concerned with me as a human being when I want Him enough. At long last I see, I feel, I believe. Scales of pride and prejudice has fallen from my eyes. A new world has come into view.
If you are as seriously alcoholic as we were, we believe there is no middle-of-the-road solution. We were in a position where life was becoming impossible, and if we had passed into the region from which there is no return through human aid, we had but two alternatives: One was to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we could; and the other, to accept spiritual help. This we did because we honestly wanted to, and were willing to make the effort. 25, 26
I am seriously addicted as any addict or alcoholic, I believe there is no middle-of-the-road solution. I am in a position where life has becoming impossible, and I have passed into the region from which there is no return through human aid, I have but two alternatives: One is to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of my intolerable situation as best I can; and the other, to accept spiritual help. This I will because I honestly want to, and am willing to make the effort.
Much to our relief, we discovered we did not need to consider another's conception of God. Our own conception, however inadequate, was sufficient to make the approach and to effect a contact with Him. As soon as we admitted the possible existence of a Creative Intelligence, a Spirit of the Universe underlying the totality of things, we began to be possessed of a new sense of power and direction, provided we took other simple steps. We found that God does not make too hard terms with those who seek Him. 46
Much to my relief, I have discovered I do not need to consider another's conception of God. My own conception, however inadequate, is sufficient to aproach Him and to make contact with Him. They flatly declare that since they have come to believe in a Power greater than themselves, to take a certain attitude toward that Power, and to do certain simple things, there has been a revolutionary change in their way of living and thinking. In the face of collapse and despair, in the face of the total failure of their human resources, they found that a new power, peace, happiness, and sense of direction flowed into them. This happened soon after they wholeheartedly met a few simple requirements. Once confused and baffled by the seeming futility of existence, they show the underlying reasons why they were making heavy going of life. Leaving aside the drink question, they tell why living was so unsatisfactory. They show how the change came over them. When many hundreds of people are able to say that the consciousness of the Presence of God is today the most important fact of their lives, they present a powerful reason why one should have faith.

When I come to believe in a Power greater than myself, to take a certain attitude toward that Power, and to do certain simple things, there will be a revolutionary change in my way of living and thinking. In the face of collapse and despair, in the face of the total failure of my human resources, I will find that a new power, peace, happiness, and a sense of direction will flow into me. This will happen soon after I wholeheartedly meet a few simple requirements. Once confused and baffled by the seeming futility of existence, I will see the underlying reasons why I am making a heavy going of life. Leaving aside the addiction question, I can tell why living has been so unsatisfactory. I will see a change come over me. When many hundreds of people are able to say that the consciousness of the Presence of God is today the most important fact of their lives, they present a powerful reason why I should have faith. I therefore see how the consciousness of the Presence of God today needs to be the most important fact of my life, this is a powerful reason why I should have faith.
The main thing is that he be willing to believe in a Power greater than himself and that he live by spiritual principles.
Even so has God restored us all to our right minds. To this man, the revelation was sudden. Some of us grow into it more slowly. But He has come to all who have honestly sought Him.
When we drew near to Him He disclosed Himself to us!
