triggers- set us off to destructive behavior. they can be internal ( self thoughts or emotions) or external ( situations, events, or what people say or do).
they usually elicit feelings of fear or anger. often times , to get rid of these uncomfortable and overwhelming feelings, people dink alcohol, use street and / or precripition drugs, eat, ect, or a combination of destructive behaviors, to eliminate the ''pain''.
the emotional '' pain'' is not actually eliminated -- it still remains..
our triggers '' need to be looked at carefully. they serve as windows to our inner- selves...
monitor yourself for a day;;
day--------------------------
describe the situations in the day_______________
external triggers--------------------------------------------
internal triggers-------------------------------------------
behavior------------------------------------------------ of how you handle or felt, worked out, ect...
was i satisfied with my behavior----------------------
what could i do differently in the future----------------
working on our triggers; help us open and close the windows in our recovery.....
we begin to figure out why, what and how,
the triggers have effected us, past and present, and future..

TEXTi too TEXT
i too agree triggers are apart of our every day life, sometimes we can avoid them , or not even see them..
but they are here! and we need to face them straight up , and stay focused on our recovery..
talking about triggers helps us ; if we locate what they are and work them , just like we do with the steps , we get throw them one step at a time..
recovery works when we work it...
stay focused... and alive..

One of the biggest triggers, and the thing that gave me the worst cravings in early sobriety and can still affect me today is vanilla!
I can't stand scented vanilla candles, drink vanilla flavored coffees, and I noticed at Christmas Time when I made chocolate chip cookies that I tasted the vanilla and thought it was very strong. It is a taste I am very sensitive to. When I looked at the root cause, it goes back to early recovery when I went to the treatment center I had just graduated from and someone put a vanilla bean in the coffee. I had the worst day in my life and the cravings lasted all day, and but for the grace of God, my sponsor, a meeting I went to, and the strong support group I didn't pick up, but I was sure hurting.
I realized that it affected me that way because I use to sit a bottle of rye by the coffee machine and drank my coffee black, with rye instead of milk!

CLEAR THOUGHTS AND STILL I SEE THE TRIGGERS DAILY..
I KNOW PEOPLE ARE A STRONG TRIGGER,,
I KNOW DRIVING BY THE BAR IS A TRIGGER, SO I HAVE TO KEEP DRIVING BY... NEVER STOPPING...
I SEE PEOPLE STILL ON SUB-STANCES, I TELL MYSELF, BOY I WISH THEY FIND RECOVERY..
I KEEP MY EYES OPEN,, MY THOUGHTS CLEAR ,,
AND I FACE MY TRIGGERS HEAD ON,,, NOT WHERE I WOULD GET IN A BAD PLACE BUT IN MY HEAD...
OR I TALK TO SOMEONE WHO WILL LISTEN, NOT JUDGE..
THATS WHATS NICE ABOUT RECOVERY PEOPLE...
WE KNOW, WE LISTEN AND WE SHARE....
TOGATHER WE WORK ON RECOVERY......
SO REMEMBER TRIGGERS ARE AND WILL BE IN YOUR
LIFE,,, YOU ARE AN ADDICT;;;;;; AND TRIGGERS ARE
THE DISEASE, TRYING TO GET YOUR ATTENTION...
SO REMEMBER;;;;;
WE DON'T TALK TO OUR DISEASE..
WE ARE LETTING THAT DIE.....................................
BUT, WE CAN TALK TO THE DEEP INTER FEELING
AND LET IT KNOW! WE ARE NOT GOING TO SUFFER
ANYMORE.........................................
TODAY I AM SOBER/ CLEAN
JUST FOR TODAY IAM WORKING MY RECOVERY..
AND AT THE END OF THIS DAY, MAY I THANK GOD!
IAM SOBER AND CLEAN... WELL, HE LETS ME REST MY
WINGS FOR TOMORROW..................................

What triggers you. Anger, resentments and guilt are big ones.

Always good to remember. Just because I feel like using doesn't mean I have to pick up, but I do need to acknowledge the feeling.
