Greetings all, Just found this board, it looks like a good place to be. ACOA is "Adult Children of Alcoholics," correct? If so, this may be the best place for me to start. I joined another recovery board about a week ago, and it has been helpful, I'm hoping this one may be as well. As seems well-noted among 12 Steppers, often our "issues" are interrelated, and I am no exception to that. On the other recovery board, I've started a daily journal that records my progress with recovery goals. Perhaps I'll consider that here as well, we'll see. Thanks, Progress

Thank you for sharing. I do like the name, progress is all we can do, one day at a time.
We didn't get sick overnight, we don't heal overnight.
Sorry I didn't get to post about the meeting tonight, just got here at 8 p.m. tonight.
Feel free to ask any questions, if I haven't shared the experience, I am sure that there are others here who have.

Welcome Progress, Glad you found our site. Surf around and read. Are you going to any face to face meetings? The following is the web sites for Al-Anon and ACOA. There you can find meetings in your area. www.al-anon-alateen.org/meetings/meeting.htmlwww.adultchildren.org/Remember one thing :- We call it the 3 C's ..... You didn't cause it. You can't control it. You can't cure it. Hope to see you around at our own on line meetings, and on the boards. love & God bless Arlene (lildee)

Thanks,
I appreciate the welcomes!
Just curious, "can't cure it" doesn't mean that we don't have some responsibility in our own recovery, correct?

Hi Progress,
"Can't cure it" for me means I can't cure or fix the disease of addiction or alcoholism. It tells me that I am powerless over other people , places, and things. I can only take responsibility for ME. (with guidance from my HP.) By saying I can't cure it it relieves me of the guilt of not being able to "fix it". By making this admission it helps me to stop enabling the addict/alcoholic and it also makes it easier to detach (with love) from him when necessary.
Keep the questions coming. That is how we learn.
Love and God Bless Arlene

Thanks,
Unfortunately, I do have addictive behaviors of my own. I wonder how you think about those- our HP has the power to change (cure?) these by acting through us when we surrender our own egos?

Hi Progress,
Sure we all have our own addictive traits, we are co-dependents. We yell, we, scream, we smoke, we eat, we do all sorts of things to divert our attention away from the addict/alcoholic. But as you work the Steps you will realiize your own charater traits amd deal with them accordingly through the help of a Higher Power. We let go of all these things. Sometimes easily, sometimes we fight for them tooth and nail. But we are aware of them and that is a start to their release.
Love & God Bless Arlene

We are cured, but our dis-ease is arrested one day at a time, when we work the program. As we learn to walk the spiritual principles of the program, we learn to let go of old behaviors and learn to live a healthier lifestyle, walking this spiritual journey, not alone, but with a Higher Power of our own understanding.
Recovery for me has been an inward journey into myself. All my life I lived through other people, looking outside of myself for something to make me happy, whether it was drugs, alcohol, men, food, work, and the list goes on.....
Through working and walking this program, I try to the best of my ability to be balanced and centered, within myself, connected to my Higher Power, I have dail reprieve from active addiction.

Welcome to EOR Progress! I am sorry I had the flu last weekend and totally missed your post.
tonight is the ACOA meeting. I hope you will join us! 8 PM eastern, 7 central and 5 pacific.
Can we CURE opthers? nope. taht's up to them and to their own time schedule to even WORK on themselves. Can we CURE ourselves? Not sure the word CURE fits as much as putting things in remission. recovery means i recovery from this disease. I got sick by trying to manipulate and control people who were not ready to change. I got sick and yelled, screamed, chased, searched, poured out bottles, etc. I did sick things that did not help any of the people involved. I CAN get better but ti's up to ME. I ahve to work the steps, read, go to emetings and change things i can change.
Hope you can join us tonight!
