When I decided I needed to quit, I detoxed on my own in a room at the YWCA. It was a good remember when, I never wanted to go through it again. It kept me clean and sober. No one told me about detox.
Met a young fellow who was diagnosed as a chronic alcoholic at the age of 18. He was given drugs to help him detox from alcohol and he ended up with two addictions. He wanted to get sober, but one drug led him to another. He came to meetings and got involved in service, but he kept getting caught up in the cycle. The drugs took him back to the alcohol.
We can't stay clean and sober unless we abstain from all drugs and alcohol is a drug. Even near beer and other substitutions, will take someone out as they are all big triggers. For me it was flavored coffees, especially vanilla. The bottle sat beside the coffee pot.
From what I have seen over the last 26 years, the only that really works is one alcoholic/addict sharing with another alcoholic/addict. We can do what I can't do alone.

Many people don't recognize that they can suffer from emotional hangovers.
I never want to go through detox again. I was talking to a newcomer at the Christmas party on Tuesday. She says, "People like you inspire me." I said, "People like you carry me a great message. You tell me that it isn't any better out there and I need to STAY in recovery.
