The religion I was raised in did not stop me from becoming an addict. I questioned this, but I realized my religious beliefs didn't make my choices. I made my choice based on what I thought and heard from others, and I found out a lot of things were old tapes, even my concept of God was someone else's idea of who God was. I had to make God personal and find out "Who God is to me." How can I truly believe in something I don't know. What I did come to believe in was the NA program. I fell in love with their literature in 1991, especially the Just for Today reading. I had to fill the void in my life with spiritual things. Those spiritual things helped me to stay clean and sober. It wasn't me who kept me clean. NA is a WE program, we can do what I can't do myself.

My service sponsor said, "I don't care who your Higher Power is as long as it's not you."
