Using a metaphore, like the old-timers' did to explain a thought in simple terms, I would liken the AA cliches' to ammunition to be used in the trenches of daily living while the 12 steps remain our battle plan.
During the "work-a-day" world we may not have time to contemplate a particular step but we can fire a bullet on the spot such as "and this too shall pass", easy does it, first things first, what does this mean over a life time ect.
During the sixties and seventies, the old-timers placed a great emphasis on these "bullets". I know they can get us through some diffucult moments of life.
My favorite bullet has always been "and this too shall pass". Over the years everything has passed and is now history. This gives me a perspective on the happenings of reality.
Five months ago, my wife had back surgery. She was in intense pain up till last week when the pain began to subside. Another example of of my favorite cliche. BTW, she is sober on AA for 29 years and never asked for a drink to eliminate the pain. She knows DINAO (drinking is *not* an option, no matter what).
Do you have a favorite "bullet", I know I missed allot of them.
Still "muddling through a day at a time".............Tiger

Hi Tiger,
Once again, nice post. My favorite 'bullet' has always been "Let Go. Let God." When I find myself confronted with things I cannot change I just remember that phrase. I put it in God's hands and let it go from there. It helps me to remember who is ultimately in charge. I frequently forget that.

Dear Tiger---A club I got sober in & went to meetings in for years had slogans on the wall arranged so that the first word in each slogan formed a new slogan!!!! It was so cool!!! I still remember it---- LIVE EASY BUT THINK FIRST this was the first words of the slogans--- Live & Let Live,Easy Does It, But for the Grace of God, Think Think Think, First Things First. These are all great slogans & I think it was real clever how the club had them arranged. Sincerely-Mistyeve

Here are a few that come to mind off the top of the head:
One foot in yesterday, one foot in tomorrow and pissing all over today.
I can, He can.
Wonder what an adult would do in a situtation like that?
KISS
First things first.
Easy Does It.
Let go, let God.
Just keep coming back.
Don't drink and go to meetings.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life. ( and to that I always add, "So make the most of it:)
Have a great weekend and take care my friends.

In 1988 I had a t-shirt and sweet shirt business, I sold some recovery graphics that were silk screened on the font of each shirt. The one I like the best and SOLD the best:
was a white t-shirt that had two pink elaphants, one standing on the side of a cliff holding it's trunk out straight over the edge of the cliff. At the end of he or she trunk is the other elaphant hanging by it's tail and the look on it face is OMG, the caption reads "Release With Love" lol I sold allot of those lol.... those were the days. lol
We had a small convention here a few years ago now, and I let them use that graphic for there logo, so I have a coffee mug with that disgn on it too. I just love it, and it makes me smile when I see it and think of it.
Yes the old saying from the old timers where really great, all thoough I didn't think so when I first got sober, but today I really miss them. Thanks for sharring Tiger.

One of my all time favorites is---THE MIND CAN ONLY TOLERATE WHAT THE ASS CAN STAND!!!! I really like the one you mentioned about "what would an adult do in this situation?" That is classic!!! Thanks so much for your post honey! It is just great & so are you!!!! Tiger you really picked a excellent topic!!! Thanks so much!---Mistyeve

I usually live by, "this too shall pass" and a really important one for me is One Day At A time. I love "Easy Does It" especially if I have had a stressful day. I really enjoyed reading all of these everyone wrote.
I would love to have the t shirt...release with love. Thats great!

Dear Gracie---My very first sponsor in AA was real fond of the slogan THIS TOO SHALL PASS. In fact it was her answer for everything!!! I got real impatient and wanted times dates and places as to when it would pass exactly!!! She gave me a bumper sticker with THIS TOO SHALL PASS on it and it is mounted on a piece of wood and hangs over my toilet!!!! That will pass for sure!!!! I have hung it over every toilet I have had for the past 23 years---Too much information??? LOL Sorry if it is!!! Had to share this it was a burning desire! Mistyeve

Hi Gracie,
Like you, my favorite has always been "and this too shall pass".
The one cliche that has remaind constant during my sober years has been the above.
There has been good years, bad years and the in-between years but "everything" has become history.
I use to know an old-timer who kept a daily log each day on the happenings in his life. A great tool to reinforce "and this too shall pass"
Next week I'm going to pick a new topic titled "The MOM Syndrome" and how I discovered it

Well I was surprised that people in the U.S. had never heard the slogan, "Hesitate and Meditate." Another favourite of mine is, "Use it or lose it" and "Utilize, not criticize. But my all time favourite is "One Day at a Time. A day can start any time. It is hard to believe that it took all this time coming to the site and only find out a few weeks ago, that I could click on "..." and a window comes up and you can type in a page you want to see.

One day at a time is still my favourite. I like to follow it up though with "Each day is a new beginning, so have a great one"
