If the expectations and activities of the holidays create
too much stress in your life, these suggestions may help
you get back on track so you can relax and enjoy the
holiday season.
Holiday Tips
- Set priorities and make time for yourself. Be sure to get
enough sleep and exercise. - Cut your social activities/obligations in half. Know when
to say "enough." - When possible, shop alone at "non-peak" hours. If you
have to shop on traditionally busy days, try to get to the
stores early. When you can, shop on-line or order by phone. - Cut your card list in half. Send only to out-of-town family
and friends. - Delegate tasks. Hire a caterer, call the florist, order from
a bakery, and get a cleaning service. - To cut down your time in the kitchen, cook meals in
advance and freeze them, and try to eat balanced meals on
non-party days. - Make homemade gifts or buy simple gifts.
Party Tips
- Attend only those parties you know you will enjoy.
Let go of "obligations." - Eat something healthy before going out and take just
a "taste" of your holiday favorites. - As a party host, serve some low-calorie, low-fat
snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. - Sip a low-calorie drink instead of snacking on
high-fat items.
Family Tips
- Let go of family traditions that are simply too much
work or no longer make sense. - Set priorities as a family; make a holiday family schedule,
gift guidelines, etc.
Budget Tips
- Make a holiday spending plan: include entertaining,
cards/stamps, and gifts. - Don't put anything on your charge card that
you can't pay off in full next month. - De-emphasize the cost and emphasize the
thoughtfulness in gift giving.
