When I went to the 30 year anniversary for a woman who use to be my sponsor, I found myself being resentful. Another woman who I have known a long time came into the meeting, she is very over weight and very slovenly in her appearance and says she has 20 years sober. She shows me the difference between sober and sobriety. If you have recovery, show it. My friend who was celebrating has a problem with the chairs the church provides and she brought a plastic lawn chair to sit in at the meeting which she keeps there. This woman, who claims to be my friends, closest friend, sat in her chair. I just couldn't believe it. To me, this is not a friend. I also found myself resenting my friend for allowing the woman to do it. To me she was still people pleasing and not taking care of herself.
My friend is about 10 years older than the other woman in age as well as sobriety. I had to accept that it was her stuff and let it go. I am hoping by posting this that it will help me to do that. Every time I think of it I get ticked off.
My friend has really grown in the last 5 years, losing weight, getting active and trying to help herself. She is one of the most spiritual beings on this earth and has trouble setting boundaries with people, she doesn't like to say no. When learning this she teneded to go overboard and be very aggressive when she tried. She has narcolepsy sleeping disorder in which she passes out and goes into a coma and a lot of people think she is just sleeping. I have seen one of her friends with her at meetings who don't wake her up and I have had to walk across a room and wake her. It amazes me how some people can be so unaware and uncaring and still claim long term sobriety. She has over 40 years of sobriety.
