Looking for some thoughts or suggestions for bringing in more people to share on the message boards.... Looking for idea's or suggestions for General Chat or Open Recovery meetings.... What day? What time? etc. Keep in mind that we have EST-CST & PST... time zones to take into account! Or am I beating a dead horse? If we're done, let me know and I'll stick a fork in it.... ;D Peace on the journey...... SunnyGirl

Perhaps people don't know how to operate the board and are fearful of spelling, typing errors, etc. There is no right or wrong way to post, yet you have to know how to do it.
Perhaps a post on the features available here and how to use them would allow people to post easier. Some are just not computer literate. I know when I first got here, I didn't have a clue. Someone showed me the way. I didn't know a Thread was a post.

Great idea Caressa.... Did you want to put instructions for this or are you asking me to I'm ok with it either way...... But I don't think anyone should worry about having to do a spell check before posting, but it's nice for them to know about all the functions.... (Lord knows I have some righteous run on sentences... ;D) We had something like this once upon a time but who knows where it went.... Ok, I'm back and have added the how to's to the Newcomers welcome post.....

I used to print up little cards with the name of the site and the web page. I'd put them on the bulletin boards at the meeting rooms. Those of us who come here are from several states or areas. If we all did this, we might get some traffic moving...at least perhaps some new faces to post on the boards. I am willing to do it again.
I'd love to have a time I could attend an open recovery meeting. Liek you said..time zones are a problem at times. There used to be a Sunday evening at 7 eastern. Thats 6 central and 4 pacific. It's before the popular TV shows are on and uaually later in the afternoon when people are finished iwth shopping, etc. Just a thought.

Great idea Lin.... I remember years ago when you did this! Also sending emails to all the old timers might bring a few more back now and then... I'm going to talk to Max about sending a mass email out, not sure how many email address' are the same though.... A Sunday night open recovery meeting sounds fine to me, even the time will work. Glad you've got your wheels turning.... When we get the details all worked out we can post it in the coffee shop (who-what-when) Thanks for the input.... Luv ya, SG

I have sent links to the site and to post here over a long period of time. People do visit, a few have joined, and a few have chose not to come back.
I think we just need to pray and turn it over. What will be will be, and as long as we post good recovery material, and not a lot of gossip and chit chat, people will continue to come. It is good to share and kabitz with each other, but I think it is important to carry the message to the addict who still suffers. I don't mean just NA or AA, but people with other issues too.
If we do the footwork, then the rest will follow. I feel I have been doing that since I came here. I have a link to the site on all of my groups.

Mornin Caressa.... I agree, we do need to keep the focus on recovery and posting "good recovery material".... but it's also important to put the human side of recovery on the boards. I think people relate to the daily lives and mistakes we make and learn from. When we share about our loved ones in alanon or naranon those that have similar situations look to see what tools we use and how we handle it. As for "gossip and chit chat".... I don't believe I've ever read a post on the boards that I consider gossip. Not once! "Chit chat".... how does this differ from "share and kibitz" In my opinion, the coffee shop is an excellent place for light hearted gab-chit chat- kibitzing and general news going on in our lives. "We are not a glum lot"..... Celebrate the gift of recovery! Not everyone will agree with me.... Not everyone will agree with you.... The important part is that we take what we need and leave the rest! Today cut/paste is not an issue..... We have designated an area for it and it seems to be working. We've had 4 or 5 newcomers sign up and I am hopeful that they will share and become part of the EOR family. They are the ones that I keep coming back for.... I pray daily for this site and have faith that it will come back around... But I also believe we need to work together as a group to accomplish it. ”Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (James 2:14-18) Peace on the journey, SunnyGirl

Great idea Lin.... I remember years ago when you did this! Also sending emails to all the old timers might bring a few more back now and then... I'm going to talk to Max about sending a mass email out, not sure how many email address' are the same though.... Tis is only one way to find out is to try and see what the outcome of it is. On the subject of bringing back the old EOR traffic has been a huge issue since the fall of EOR (meaning people stopped coming) BUT.. I feel that if maybe we put a sign on the main page, the green page of WELCOME and a direct link to how to get around here. Most people do go humm when they come here. Meetings for me was always always a problem one time or another due to my time zones. I can remember cooking and sitting for meetings and eating dinner at the keyboards. LOL Maybe if things pick up a bit, if it does we can have Pacific time zone only meetings. Idk. lol. Maybe Max can lead it. (hint hint) Advertisement is always hard. With the economy the way it is nowadays, I truly wouldn't be surprise to see it have a bigger turnout in dealing with issues of recovery due to problems that is becoming more a problem. Hope that made sense. LOL

dg ...
You may be spot on about the "economy" having an impact on recovery. There are always those that seek to drown their sorrows....
I just hope that we can always be there to reach out to those still out there.....
And I will say again, I do not believe that my expectations for EOR are unreasonable. By the way, I also have expectations that the sun will come up in the east tomorrow! ;D

Don't take it personal, my comment wasn't directed at anyone, it was just words I used to describe what was not recovery material for newcomers but personal stuff between members. It belongs in the coffee shop and that is what the space is used for. I just meant the board isn't a chat room. I don't do chat rooms, never have. Except to go in for a meeting once in a while, I have seldom been in this one or the ones on Another-24-Hours, Another Empty Bottle, and other recovery sites I have visited. I never go into public chat, but that is my choice. I try to walk my talk, and what you see is what you get. I tell it as I see it. I don't sugar coat it to make it sound good yet I am not trying to be nasty either.
I was referring to the difference of opinions that have been expressed here. Perhaps some of them could be done by private messages. I know several members who have been here and don't come back as a result of it. I have sent out over 100 invitations repeatedly all over U.S. and Canada, some of those are people who have posted here in the past.
People get busy and have a life, that is what recovery is about. I just happen to be retired and disabled and don't sleep much, certainly not regularly. I just got up from laying down from a nap at 3 p.m. at 10:30 p.m. I went to physio therapy today, came home from lunch and posted on my sites, and ran out of steam. We do what we have to do.

Just read this and I can talk to a few people in my network and see what they think. I know a lot of people like my sponsor who have great sobriety and more importantly, internet access, who can be a great addition. The fact that I am currently unemployed (sigh) means I can visit more often. I'm not a big fan of chat rooms just because my typing stinks and I can't keep up.

Evenin Simon.....
Your post was like a breath of fresh air.... And it is exactly what this site needs! We are sorely lacking in AA and NA members who are willing to share... We've had a few new people register, so I am hopeful.
It's been a few years but there was a time when this site had wonderful on-line meetings... I chaired the weekly Nar-Anon meeting and led the Open Recovery meetings temporarily....
I am a firm believer in "nothing happens by chance"! Your set back just may turn out to be a blessing for all of us..... I am sending up prayers that you will find a great job and that God will allow you to "keep coming back".....
Peace on the journey, Cherie
