As a couple of old timers, one with over 40 years of sobriety, who go to my home group don't stay sober my way, find your own way. If you tried my way, you may get drunk. Don't be so full of yourself that you think that yours is the only way. All we can do is share our experience, strength, and hope, so that someone may find part and/or parcel for themselves to find a program that works for them. It is about one drunk sharing with another, it isn't about the Big Book or doing the Steps (they say not until after your first year and I agree), people stayed sober before the Big Book was written.

The 12 steps and the Big Book are a "suggested way of recovery" Just like it is suggested that you have a parachute when you jump out of plane!!!!

Yes it is a program of suggestions, and there are some darn well betters that I found out over the years in the rooms of recovery. I know I would never have stayed sober on the Big Book for me, it was the 12 & 12. I read it and studied it to learn about my disease. I didn't relate to a lot of my journey to it, especially at first. I had never been to jail, until I volunteered there. I was never a falling down drunk, I was the one who took my husband home. Yet I could see how my life deteriated over the years and my thinking and my production on the job went slowly downhill.
I did the moving thing, and substitution thing, and the game playing. Brought out the masks, said what I thought you wanted me to say, and stayed in total denial because I compared instead of identifying. I was not as bad as.... Even in my recovery, I went that extra mile that many don't do and have had a sponsor in Al-Anon and in AA, who said they never met anyone who worked as hard on their recovery as I do.
Going back to where I came from was never an option. I had to cover all my bases, and it wasn't just about alcohol. It was prescription drugs, food, work/busy, my computer, and relationships.
Words mean nothing, whether you can quote them chapter and verse, if you don't apply them to your life and learn to live them and practice them, one day at a time.

coincidence is God being anonymous and I have also been told it is a "God Shot" These 2 things really let me know God is giving me answers and strength..........Bunnypie

It is all about being in today and connecting with my God. I can't base my tomorrows on yesterday. With my God, each day is a new beginning.
