A is for Acceptance. I need to accept the fact that I can't have just one. One is too many, a thousand isn't enough. I need to play the tape to the end. Part of accepting that I am an alcoholic was admitting that I couldn't drink safely. Acceptance is the key to recovery. A willingness to go to any length to maintain my sobriety.

B is for Blessing. There are so many blessing as a result of staying clean and sober. We can hear the birds sing, we notice the flowers in bloom, we can see the sunny skies and we see the people around us, and love them for who they are, not always I would have them be.

C is for Christmas. I was told to look at it as another 24 hours. It is just another day I need to stay clean and sober. I was told if I had to go somewhere, to have a back up plan, an alternative ride home in case I had to leave early if I thought my sobriety was in jeopardy. I had to look at my motive for being some where. What it an old tape and old friends who were a threat to my recovery. Not that they were bad or wrong in what they did, they had choices and they were at where they were at in their life's journey. It was important for me to make healthy choices for me and my recovery.

D is for Detachment. Detachment doesn't mean I don't love, it means I detach because I do love. I don't have to add love to it, it is already there. I don't have to remove myself from the person, I just have to mind my own business.

E is for Emotions. Don't bury them, ignore them, or act them out. Turn them over to your Higher Power. Work through them and when you get to the other side, you will wonder, "What on earth was I worried about any way?" You have to feel the emotion before you can let it go.

G is for Gratitude. Put some gratitude into your attitude. Don't just say it, show it! I was told a grateful alcoholic will never have a reason to pick up.

J is for Joy. Wishing everyone the joy of the season. We don't have to use in order to enjoy life. I am powerless over people, places, and things. I can't look to others to find that joy, I need to go within and connect to my Higher Power.

K is for Kindle. Kindle the love in your heart. When you come from a place of love, you can't help but be loving and kind to yourself and others.

M is for Memories. Life is full of memories. Some are good to store for a rain day, others are best let go of and let them flow down the drain. Just because I have a feeling, I don't have to act out in it. I can pause and think of the slogan, "Hesitate and Meditate." This is a new year and I have freedom of choice as to what I will take with me into 2017 and what I will leave in 2016.

O is for Open-Mind. Don't keep such an open mind that everything falls out of it. I heard those words of wisdom from a long timer in early recovery. Open your mind to new concepts and ideas. You don't have to accept them all, but it will help you to find your own truth. You just might hear something that will be helpful to you and something you can pass on to others.

P is for Patience. Have it if you can! Serenity is my goal and I can't find it if I am impatient with myself and others. It is the second half of Step One. Working on my emotional sobreity and living in today. Not my will, but my God's will be done. It isn't all about me. I need to be patient and wait my turn.

Q is for Quit. Quit your belly aching. Put some gratitude into your attitude. My worst day in recovery far exceeds my best day when I was using. If you aren't enjoying recovery, what are you doing wrong? You have been given a second chance at life, make the best of it. It is quite enjoyable, when you live it one day at a time.

R is for Rest. Don't rest on your laurels, each day is a new beginning. This is a one day at a time program. You can take time to rest and talk to your God, but don't sit around and wait for Him/Her to do it for you. This is a we program.

U is for Unity. When we all come to come together with a common goal, to stay clean and sober, we have a daily reprieve, if we are willing to not pick up that drug that takes us out of ourselves. We can do what I can't do alone.
