A is for Attitude. It takes one to know one. I pray and ask that I have the right attitude for all occasions. As my sponsor told me many years ago, "Do people look at you and see recovery." We need a personality change sufficient to bring about recovery.

B is for Born. We are reborn of the spirit. We are given a new chance at life. We were not born to be alcoholics. Some believe it is part of our genetics. It may be true, but I think it is more about the fact that we are products of our environment.

C is for Creator. I need to give thanks to my Creator for the many gifts that He has bestowed on me. I need to be aware of His Creation and recognize His Power, and know that if He can do that, He has the power to help me.

E is for Eating Disorder. The 12 Steps are applicable to all areas of my disease. Not eating can put on weight, and our thinking 'fat' means we have to change our attitude, accept where we are at in today, and make healthy choices. I am given freedom of choice. I have freedom to eat. It is up to me, what I put in my mouth. We are what we eat. As the saying goes, "It isn't about being hungry, it is about what is eating you." Our disease is mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical.

F is for Forgiveness. I always need to put myself as part of the equation, and forgive myself. I need to stop beating myself up. Sometimes an act is unforgivable, but the person is not.

G is for Gratitude. When those little things happen, try to remember to say thank you. Sometimes we wonder how certain things happen, but they do. As a friend of mine use to say, "That's not odd, that's God." My God does for me what I can't to for myself. For that I am very grateful.

I is for Idea. When you get an idea, check where it came from and look at where it will take you if you follow it up with action. Sometimes it is good to follow thought with action, other times it is best if you "Hesitate and Meditate."

N is for Newcomers. Was so grateful to have a newcomer at our group today. They carry a great message. It isn't any better out there and I don't have to go back out and do any more research. Each time I like to take an attitude of when I was new, open to listening and learning and living in the now. So important to stay in the now, let go of the past and not project into the future. Each day is a new beginning. I told him a day can start any time. Any time your day isn't going right, start it anew. Just for today, I choose not to use.

O is for Opportunity. We have a new opportunity to live a better life. When I stay clean and sober, doors opened and opportunities appeared and I had a choice as to what I wanted to do with my life. I had options. The only option I didn't have was to go back to where I came from. For me to use is to die.

P is for Practice. Practice what you preach. Better still, don`t preach, walk your talk. This is a program of practice, practice, practice, and just for today, I will try to get it right. There is no right way or wrong way, it is the way that works for us.

Q is for Quit. Quit drinking and picking up a drug. Quit all mind altering substances. Quit those old habits and behaviors that no longer serve you in today. Quit being so hard on yourself. This is a one day at a time program. It isn't a quick fix, it is a process, remember first things first. We can't move forward if we don't get rid of the old to make room for the new.

R is for responsibility. I always thought I was responsible for everybody around me and whatever they did. Now I know I am only responsible for my own words and actions.
(In another sense..I DO know I am responsible to feed and care for my dogs..and when I was teaching I was responsible to do my best job and to see that my students learned and knew they were special. )

T is for Trust. You can't trust others, if you can't trust yourself. I found that when I trusted my HP, I knew He was with me. If someone was put in my path, He would see me through. There was generally a lesson to be learned and I had to trust that if he put someone in my path and lead me to them, I had to trust the process.
